Amalgam

You will recall from several editions of DLC info and from the survey the Brussels office undertook in September 2005, that there are plans in the European Parliament to phase out/ban dental amalgam. Mark Beamish (EU Affairs Officer) attended the debate in the ENVI (Environment and Public Health) committee on 24 January and a large number of MEPs spoke out against dental amalgam, insisting that it must be banned.

Dear colleagues,

We have been informed about correspondence from the DLC stating the following:

“You will recall from several editions of DLC info and from the survey the Brussels office undertook in September 2005, that there are plans in the European Parliament to phase out/ban dental amalgam. Mark Beamish (EU Affairs Officer) attended the debate in the ENVI (Environment and Public Health) committee on 24 January and a large number of MEPs spoke out against dental amalgam, insisting that it must be banned.

The DLC Brussels office has been in touch with a number of MEPs on this dossier since last Summer, and Martin Callanan (EPP, UK) agreed to table an amendment to the draft  parliamentary resolution, which would delete from the Parliament's resolution the demand to ban amalgam. The vote on this dossier and on this amendment is on 22 February.

We would strongly encourage you to contact MEPs from your country in the ENVI committee and explain to them why banning amalgam is neither necessary nor desirable.”

The FDI World Dental Federation’s Science Committee has compiled the following information for circulation to the DLC members for possible use in the debate prior to the vote on this matter. We trust that it would be of assistance to you.

We wish you every success.

Yours sincerely,
Dr JT Barnard
Executive Director
