COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN DENTISTS (CED)

The Council of European Dentists is a European
not-for-profit association that represents
over 300,000 dentists through national dental
associations and chambers in EU, EU candidate
and EEA countries.

It was established in 1961 to advise the European
Commission on matters relating to the
dental profession, and its objectives are to
represent the dental profession in the EU, and
promote a high level of oral health and high-
quality dental care.

The CED is registered in th e European Commission's
Register of interest representatives
and adheres to the Code of conduct for interest
representatives, formulated on the basis of
principles of openness and transparency. The
CED defines its policy independently of other
organisations.

// WHAT?

The CED seeks to shape EU policy in areas
affecting the dental profession, through the
promotion of high standards of oral healthcare
and effective patient-centred professional
practice across Europe.

The CED cooperates closely with the EU institutions
and health stakeholders in order to
achieve its goals. The European Commission
seeks expertise and opinions from the CED but
often the CED works proactively to ensure that

the outcomes of EU action are positive for oral

health and the dental profession in Europe.
The CED works on a range of issues, from
patient safety and ethics, through medical devices
and tooth-whitening products, to dental
training and professional mobility.

// HOW?

To achieve its political objectives, the CED
monitors EU political and legislative developments
and provides a platform for political
debate on EU policy between national dental
associations.

A range of working groups and task forces,
composed of experts, are responsible for preparing
policy on the various topics on which
the CED works. The General Meeting, which
comes together twice a year and is made up of
delegates from all across Europe, adopts CED
policy.

Strategic guidance and day-to-day administration
of the CED are the responsibility of the
Board of Directors, whose 8 members are
elected by the General Meeting for three years.

// MORE INFORMATION

The CED provides on its website links to all its
resolutions, as well as information on topics
relevant to the dental profession and oral
health in Europe to the general public.

EU Manual of Dental Practice in particular
contains extensive information on oral health
systems and the ways in which dentists
practise in 32 European countries. The EU
Manual has been written as a practical handbook
for dentists who are considering working
in another country, and also serves as a source
of regulatory and statistical data that may be of
use to dentists, patients, researchers and
policy makers alike.

CED members have access, after logging in, to
the newsletters, resolutions, working papers
and other publications of the CED. They will
also be able to find out more about the work of
CED working groups, as well as to download
working documents for CED General
Meetings.
